PETERSBURG - Most visitors to the Petersburg National Battlefield may be too busy watching the artillery demonstrations or visualizing the clash of Union and Confederate armies to notice that the 2,650- acre park is also effectively a major local nature preserve.

Now, thanks to an $85,000 grant from the National Park Service, a University of Richmond professor is getting ready to compile the first fully detailed look at just what natural resources the park holds and what kind of environmental challenges they face.
