'Redbelt' Offers a Hero to Cheer For

Summary

Playwright and filmmaker David Mamet loves to puzzle his audiences. Those who have seen "The Spanish Prisoner" or "Spartan" know that the exposition of the characters and story in Mamet's works tend to be developed and laid out during the entire film and not until the piece's concluding moments can the audience be sure who is good, bad, or what exactly is going on. This may sound unpleasant to some viewers because of the lack of clarity. For those with more patience, who love to have their mind on the edge of its seat during the whole viewing experience, Mamet is a treasure and "Redbelt" is an exceptional example of a skilled storyteller examining ancient virtues.

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Mike Terry, a devoted student of Jiu- Jitsu and owner of a martial arts training facility. Little more should be said about the plot, (since that is such an essential element of the viewing) except that the story and morality principles are somewhat similar to many martial arts films where warriors' virtues are tested to see if they practice what they have been taught.
