RICHMOND -- Families who plan how to respond to disasters before they occur simplify the process of navigating through an emergency according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

"Making a plan can make a big difference in how your family survives a disaster," said Michael Cline, the state coordinator for the VDEM. Having an emergency plan that specifies a place of meeting, a couple ways to get in touch and what should be done from there gives a sense of order to chaotic situations.
