Every day and night, while you work at your job, watch "Lost" or snooze in your bed, nature keeps herself amused, playing her own game of rock, paper, scissors. (For her paper and scissors, substitute the ancient competitors of sun, wind and water.)

Sometimes, she plays quietly, as when a trickle of water wins over a heap of sand, moving it somewhere else. Sometimes, she rages, as a hurricane of wind smashes trees and buildings.
