PETERSBURG -- Unemployment in the Tri-Cities soared in January as post-holiday workforce reductions combined with an economy in recession to give the region its highest jobless rate in at least 19 years.
Figures released Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show 15,675 people were out of work in the Tri-Cities in January, a 27 percent jump from December and 75 percent more than in January 2008.
