HOPEWELL -- With applause from a packed chambers, City Council voted 6-1 to let the former Patrick Copeland Elementary School on Appomattox Street stand at least for another 180 days while the city receives proposals and evaluates the development of the land the building stands on.

The dissenting vote on the issue Tuesday night came from Councilman Curtis Harris who said that while the school may have some historic significance, other historic schools in the city have been torn down. He added that the city doesn't have the money to rehabilitate the school.
