PETERSBURG -- Friends and family paid tribute to the late, retired Lt. Col. Howard L. Baugh yesterday.

Baugh, one of the first black pilots in U.S. military history, died Aug. 23. The Petersburg native was one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen who fought in World War II.

During his lifetime, Baugh flew 135 combat air missions and logged 250 combat flight hours. In total, he amassed 6,000 pilot hours in 15 different types of aircraft.
