Local Group Donates Tasers to Prince George Police

Summary

PRINCE GEORGE -- The Hopewell Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope donated $14,000 March 30 to the Prince George County Police Department for the purchase of 10 tasers to be issued to sworn police officers.

The Taser X26 is an electronic control device that can be used when encountering violent and potentially violent suspects. This device releases electrical pulses through wires into the suspect's body affecting the peripheral nervous system long enough to allow the officer to gain control of the suspect (http://www.taser.com for additional info). This in-turn reduces suspect and officer injury while greatly reducing the potential for using lethal force. In many cases the mere presence of this device is enough to cause the suspect to surrender peacefully. This gives police another tool to help gain control of a situation with minimal risk to the public, suspects, and law enforcement.
