PETERSBURG - With a round of applause from gathered public officials, the first strike was made into the former Virginia Employment Commission building at the corner of East Washington and North Jefferson streets.

The building has sat dormant for more than a decade after the VEC vacated the building due to environmental concerns, including severe mold growth within the structure.
