Council Nixes Idea for Elected School Board

Summary


HOPEWELL -- Don't plan to see School Board members on city ballots anytime soon. After hearing opposition from citizens and school employees alike, City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to keep appointing the School Board. They will pursue expansion to seven members, which will cost the school system up to $20,000 a year.

The issue arose this summer when four people, including veteran members Ronald Caricofe and Juanita Chambers, sought appointment to the board. City councilors make appointments every three years. Councilors decided to reappoint the pair June 25, then on July 10 moved to expand the board to seven members. Ward 5 Councilman Gerald Stokes raised the election question last month.
