PRINCE GEORGE -- The U.S. Coast Guard has closed a 1,000-yard section of the Appomattox River to boat traffic after a 250-foot- tall transmission tower was blown over by high winds Wednesday night, allowing powerful electric lines to fall into the river.

"The lines that were pulled into the river have been de- energized and there is no danger right now," Dominion Virginia Power spokesman Dan Genest said Thursday. "We hope to have the tower which was blown over fixed by Friday."
