Summary
The Rev. E. Bolling Robertson, a native of Petersburg, Va., died June 16, 2006, in Monrovia, Liberia, at the age of 87. The Rev. Robertson, an Episcopal priest, had returned to Liberia in 2004, with his wife, Marilyn, to live his final years and to encourage others to return and rebuild the educational and theological institutions, destroyed by years of civil war.
He first went to Liberia in 1944, as an Episcopal missionary and remained there until 1984. From 1945 to 1971 he resided in Robertsport, Liberia, serving as the Rector and Achdeacon of St. Johns and principal for schools K-secondary in Cape Mount County and interior Missions. These Episcopal schools : St John's Mission, Episcopal High School, St. John's Boarding Mission for Boys and the House of Bethany Boarding Mission for Girls; fostered well- educated, publicly-minded graduates, including former student, the recent interim president of Liberia, Gyude Bryant. The school's alumni now span the globe, as well as Liberia, holding theological, professional, and government positions, truly stewards of their earlier educations guided by "Father Robertson," as he was called by his students. His former Episcopal High School students honored him in 2003 with a daylong celebration for "his 26 consecutive years of dedicated and selfless contribution to their personal, educational, spiritual and professional development." These alumni also published a book in 2005, "Father E. Bolling Robertson: His Life and Work," noting his leadership, inspiration, discipline, and humanitarianism as an educator, priest and mentor, a true servant of God.
