Body Found in Hopewell Marina Is Identified

Summary

HOPEWELL - The identity of the body recovered from the Hopewell Marina on Wednesday has been confirmed as that of 48-year-old Vernon R. Barnette Jr. Conservation police officers with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries received confirmation from the Medical Examiner's Office yesterday.

Barnette's family reported him missing on Dec. 11. He had gone fishing in the marina area on the previous evening and not returned home. Family members said he usually wouldn't stay out into the early morning hours except during the summer. On the day he went missing, Barnette had planned to go fishing with a family member or coworker but ended up going alone. Before he left, he told family members, "I feel like doing some serious fishing."
