Bills Would Help Restore Faith in Government

Summary


Open government is a non-partisan issue because it is good government. Yet efforts to re-invigorate the Freedom of Information Act, first passed in 1966, have fallen to partisan wrangling in Congress disguised as a national security debate.

Following a brief period in the late 1990s when most government agencies were current in their processing of information requests, every federal agency now has a substantial backlog. That serves secrecy rather than openness and breeds suspicion of the government.
