Dinwiddie Launches Notification System
DINWIDDIE -- Dinwiddie County announced Tuesday that it has launched a mass notification platform in an effort to enhance county- wide communication and emergency preparedness. Kaine and Crew Give Park a Needed Facelift
CHESTERFIELD -- Gov. Tim Kaine has visited state parks many times, but probably hasn't work so hard during a stay. Kaine and Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation officials rolled up their sleeves to help clean and fix up a group camping area at Pocahontas State Park on Tuesday. PETERSBURG -- City Council voted unanimously to sell the city's landfill to The CFS Group, LLC. The sale for $350,000 will according to City Manager B. David Canada save the city money in closure and maintenance costs. The company that has purchased the landfill has already been operating the site since September 2008 at a cost to the city of $23,000 per month.

A Special Graduating Class of 2009
It was a special day for Del. Rosalyn R. Dance, D-63rd, and many others for the graduating class of 2009. Recently, Dance was one of the more than 50 General Educational Development graduates who participated in graduation ceremonies. For Dance, the moment was particularly special. Petersburg's former mayor and now its state lawmaker earned her GED years ago; she went on to earn a bachelor's degree and a master's degree.
Our hearts were saddened by the passing of our love one, Brother James Edward Brooks. He was known by many as Jimmy. At an early age, he joined Zion Baptist Church, Purdy, Va., where attended until he moved to Petersburg, Va. He was educated in the Greensville County School System. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged.
Patricia Wells Carwile, 83, of Swainsboro, Ga., formerly of Colonial Heights, died Sunday, July 12, 2009. She was the daughter of the late Herbert Lee and Lillie Hunter Wells.
Mr. Charles Leonard Johnson Cooper was born to Wyonna Johnson and Charles Cooper on July 12, 1934, in Wilmington, Del. He later resided with his grandmother, Mary Eliza Loper, and his aun,t Ella Mae Sipple, who raised him in Philadelphia. He attended Bartram High School and the Philadelphia Art Academy, where he earned an associate degree. He served in the United States Air Force and was discharged in the early 1950s. Mr. Mario DeOndra Dent, 26, of Prince George County, Va., passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009. He was a member of Hopewell Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses, Prince George County, Va. He attended Virginia State University, where he was also employed by VSU Bookstore.
Robert Columbus Hauser Jr., "Bob," 76, of Dinwiddie, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. Bob served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of R.C. Hauser Trucking for 34 years and was well known from all around for his BBQ and hush puppies that he prepared for numerous community and church events.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Martin Jenkins will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, 613 E. Wythe St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Merle Keene, associate pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Petersburg, eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery. Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Virginia White Kennedy, 90, formerly of Hopewell, passed away Monday, July 20, 2009, at home, with her family in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband, John R. "Buddy" Kennedy; her parents, Leviticus P. and Ada O. White; her sister, Lillie W. Taylor; and her brother, Merritt T. White. Mrs. Kennedy retired from Crestar Bank in 1983. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, The Hopewell Women's Club and Beta Sigma Phi.
James Calvin Rivers Jr., "Jake," age 59, departed this life July 14, 2009, in Norfolk, Va. He was a native of Petersburg, and was the son of the late James C. Rivers Sr. and Rebecca Gandy Rivers.
James Yates Sadler, 38, of Petersburg, died Monday, July 13, 2008. He is survived by a son, Zackery Sadler, and a daughter, Selena Sadler, both of Hopewell; brothers, Gerald A. Sadler Jr. (Sherry Richardson) of McKenney, Lester, Bernard and Michael Sadler; sister- in-law, Brenda Sadler, all of Petersburg; maternal grandmother, Beatrice Payne of Chester; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Police Need Help Looking for Missing Woman
PETERSBURG -- Police are asking the public for healp in the search for a missing person. Helen Anne Feeney, 66, was last seen April 2. She is a resident at the Brighton Manor Apartments, 36 N. Union St.
